Craftsman Training Scheme

This scheme was introduced in 1950s by Government of India with an objective to provide semi-skilled workmen to industries. This scheme is being implemented through Industrial Training Institutes and helps to improve the employability of youth.

Craftsmen Training plays a pivotal role in providing skilled manpower to the Industry. After successful completion of training, National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) Level Certification is awarded by National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT).

Government Industrial Training Institutes In Tamil Nadu, 132 Government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) are currently functioning across the State. These include 10 Government ITIs exclusively for women, two ITIs for Scheduled Caste candidates, six ITIs for Scheduled Tribe candidates, and one ITI functioning for jail inmates, ensuring inclusive access to vocational training and skill development for various sections of society.
Trades Training is imparted in 63 Engineering and 27 Non-Engineering trades.
Admission Admissions to the ITIs are carried out during June–July through an online counselling system.
Trainees Seats During 2023-24, 64,117 trainees are undergoing training.
Eligibility 8th pass or 10th pass based on the trade.
Age Criteria 14 to 40 years. No upper age limit for girls.
Duration 6 Months to 2 Years.
Fee Structure Training Provided free of cost
Caution Deposit - 100
Certificate generation Fee - Rs. 50 per certificate
Sports Fee - Rs.10 per year
Registration Fee Rs. 25
Stipend Additional stipend of Rs.1000 to Boys and Girls under Tamil Puthalvan and Puthumai Penn Scheme respectively.Monthly stipend @ Rs.750/- to all the trainees
Facilities To support effective learning and training, trainees are provided with essential items such as laptops, bicycles, books, drawing instruments, uniforms, shoes, identity cards, and raw materials for practical training free of cost.
Assessment All India Trade Test conducted by NCVT.
Certification National Trade Certificate (NTC).
Employment Self Employment or Job opportunities in industries as Technicians
Augmentation of Training Capacity

In a span of four years (2021–2025), a total of 42 new Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) have been established across the State to expand access to skill training and strengthen vocational education infrastructure. These ITIs have been set up in locations including Neyveli, Gummidipoondi, Valparai, Harur, Thenkanikottai, Manamadurai, Ottanchathiram, Kadaladi, Thiruchuli, Kunnam, Mangalore, Cheyyar, Veppur, Gujiliamparai, Pochampalli, Sendamangalam, Gandarvakottai, Kamuthi, Natrampalli, Vandampalai, Chengam, Eral, Thiruvotriyur, Krishnagiri, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Thirupparankundram, Manachanallur, Perur, Karimangalam, Gingee, Marakanam, Thisaiyanvilai, Embal, Salavakkam, Sembanarkoil, Thaa. Pazhur, Thiruthirakosamangai, Manapparai, Kangeyam, Kurukkalpatti, and Tiruchengode, thereby improving the reach of technical education and skill development opportunities in both urban and rural areas of Tamil Nadu.

These ITIs have added a capacity of 6,270 seats enabling rural youth to undergo employable skill training.
