Tool & Die Maker (Dies & Moulds)

Skills taught in ITI

  • Basic fitting operations including filing, marking, hacksawing, drilling, tapping, chipping, and grinding to ±0.1mm accuracy, making different fits of components observing interchangeability principles to ±0.05mm tolerance.
  • Performing conventional lathe operations including plain turning, facing, drilling, boring, grooving, threading, knurling, and reaming, along with milling operations including plain, angular, dovetail, T-slot, contour, and gear milling.
  • Producing high-accuracy components by surface grinding and cylindrical grinding to ±0.02mm, sharpening cutting tools, operating EDM and Wire EDM machines, and developing isometric drawings and solid modelling using CAD and Pro-E.
  • Setting CNC turning and machining centres with part programming, constructing hand injection moulds, two-cavity injection moulds, compression moulds, and side core moulds, and constructing pneumatic and hydraulic circuits.

Skills needed by Industry

  • Ability to build, repair, and modify custom-made prototypes, special tools, dies, moulds, die casting moulds, and various mechanical devices with precise measurements and dimensional accuracy.
  • Proficiency in fabricating precision components for plastic injection moulds and die cast moulds, reading and interpreting design drawings and specifications, and fitting and assembling complex mould assemblies.
  • Competence in operating conventional and CNC machine tools, EDM and Wire EDM machines, and performing high-precision machining operations to produce dies, moulds, and tooling components.
  • Skills in planning and organizing tool room work, detecting and resolving machining issues, overhauling drill machines, milling machines, and lathes, and communicating effectively in technical English with engineering teams.

Job Opportunities

  • Can work as a Tool and Die Maker in plastic injection mould manufacturing companies, die casting industries, and automotive component tooling facilities producing precision dies and moulds.
  • Can find employment in tool rooms of large manufacturing companies, defence production units, and precision engineering firms handling fabrication and maintenance of special tools and fixtures.
  • Can join CNC machining centres, EDM job shops, and mould making industries as a precision machinist producing high-accuracy components for aerospace, automotive, and consumer product industries.
  • Can become a self-employed tool room entrepreneur offering mould fabrication, repair, die modification, and precision machining services to plastic product manufacturers and engineering companies.

Upskilling Opportunities

  • Can pursue a Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Tool and Die Making from AICTE recognized institutions to gain advanced knowledge in precision manufacturing and mould design.
  • Can join the Crafts Instructor Training Scheme (CITS) to become a certified ITI instructor in the Tool and Die Maker Dies and Moulds trade after gaining required industry experience under DGT.
  • Can pursue advanced training in CAD/CAM software like Pro-E, SolidWorks, or CATIA for mould design, and obtain CNC programming certifications to meet growing demands of precision manufacturing industry.
  • Can obtain specialized certifications in injection mould design, die casting technology, or plastic product manufacturing to advance into mould designer, process engineer, or tool room supervisor positions.
