Vessel Navigator

Skills taught in ITI

  • Calculating plane parallel sailing, Mercator sailing, set and drift current, altitude corrections, using navigational equipment like sextant, azimuth mirror, pelorus, and chronometer, and determining position of celestial bodies.
  • Planning and fabricating fishing gears including trawls using TED and BRD techniques, distinguishing various fishing methods, selecting suitable fishing gears, identifying fishing gear accessories, and designing and constructing fishing gear.
  • Examining rope breaking strength and safe work loads, performing dry docking and vessel maintenance, analyzing ship stability features, preparing vessels for certificate inspection, and recognizing critical navigation situations.
  • Operating subsistent fishing gears, locating marine fishery resources of India, applying fish preservation techniques including chilling, freezing, salting, curing, canning, and hygienic fish handling and quality maintenance onboard.

Skills needed by Industry

  • Ability to navigate fishing vessels in the sea, carry out chart work, observe weather forecasts, plan passages, maneuver vessels, perform efficient watch keeping, and carry out anchor work and anchoring procedures.
  • Proficiency in operating various fishing methods including trawling, purse seining, longlining, gill netting, squid jigging, trolling, and pole and line fishing with knowledge of pros and cons of each method.
  • Competence in operating lifesaving equipment, firefighting appliances, and communication equipment during emergency and distress situations, and maintaining safety of crew during fishing operations at sea.
  • Skills in maintaining responsible fishing to sustain fishery resources and ecosystem, understanding marine environment and fishery resources, and ensuring quality of fish catch through proper handling and preservation.

Job Opportunities

  • Can work as a Vessel Navigator or Deck Seaman on fishing vessels, merchant ships, and inland water transport vessels handling navigation, watch keeping, and deck operations professionally.
  • Can find employment with the Indian Coast Guard, fisheries departments, fishing cooperatives, and commercial fishing companies operating in marine and deep-sea fishing operations.
  • Can join fishing gear manufacturing companies, net-making factories, and marine equipment suppliers as a technician involved in fabrication, design, and supply of fishing gears and accessories.
  • Can work in fish processing units, cold storage facilities, and marine food export companies applying fish preservation, quality control, and hygienic handling skills for domestic and international seafood markets.

Upskilling Opportunities

  • Can pursue a Degree in Fishery Science, Zoology, or Industrial Fisheries from UGC recognized universities combined with onboard fishing vessel experience for advanced career opportunities in fisheries.
  • Can obtain a Certificate of Competency as Skipper of Fishing Vessel from the Mercantile Marine Department to qualify for command positions on commercial fishing vessels.
  • Can join the Crafts Instructor Training Scheme (CITS) to become a certified ITI instructor in the Vessel Navigator trade after gaining required sea fishing and gear fabrication experience.
  • Can pursue specialized training in marine fisheries management, oceanography, fish processing technology, or GPS-based navigation systems to advance into supervisory, research, or fisheries development roles.
