Marine Fitter

Skills taught in ITI

  • Basic fitting operations including marking, hacksawing, chiseling, filing, drilling, tapping, turning, and grinding, along with joining operations like bolt joints, gas welding, arc welding, and brazing following safety procedures.
  • Dismantling and assembling multi-cylinder marine engines, testing fuel injectors, fuel pumps, governor systems, checking cooling and lubrication systems, modifying valve seats, and diagnosing defects of outboard motor engines.
  • Maintaining power transmission systems including steering gear, propeller, and gearbox, identifying and maintaining auxiliary equipment like pumps and valves, constructing hydraulic and pneumatic circuits, and troubleshooting marine refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
  • Setting electrical sub-systems including motors, alternators, and induction motors, identifying storage tanks, operating cargo handling equipment, understanding bunkering procedures, performing surface preparation, painting of marine structures, and planning vessel docking.

Skills needed by Industry

  • Ability to repair, service, and overhaul engines and accessories of ships and boats, checking parts for flaws using gauges and micrometers, and removing defects by chipping, filing, scraping, and grinding.
  • Proficiency in dismantling and reassembling marine propelling machinery, steam diesel auxiliaries, pumps, cargo handling machinery, anchor handling gear, ventilating equipment, and firefighting equipment as per drawings.
  • Competence in installing below deck auxiliaries like evaporators, heaters, condensers, and boilers, connecting them to steam pipe systems, and testing installed machinery during dock and sea trials.
  • Skills in attending minor electrical defects, keeping engine room watch, maintaining cleanliness, ensuring quality compliance during docking, and communicating effectively in technical English with marine engineering teams.

  • Can work as a Marine Fitter in shipyards, ship repair companies, and dry docking facilities handling repair, maintenance, and overhaul of marine engines and auxiliary machinery.
  • Can find employment with shipping companies, coast guard, Indian Navy, and merchant marine vessels as an engine room crew member assisting Marine Engineers in machinery maintenance.
  • Can join offshore oil and gas platforms, port trust authorities, and inland waterways transport corporations handling installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of marine mechanical systems.
  • Can work in boat manufacturing companies, fishing vessel maintenance units, and marine equipment suppliers handling assembly, testing, and servicing of various types of marine propulsion systems.

Upskilling Opportunities

  • Can pursue a Diploma or Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Marine Engineering from AICTE recognized institutions to qualify for Marine Engineer or higher technical positions in shipping industry.
  • Can join the Crafts Instructor Training Scheme (CITS) to become a certified ITI instructor in the Marine Fitter trade after gaining required industry experience under DGT guidelines.
  • Can obtain Merchant Navy certifications like Engine Rating Certificate or Engine Watch Keeping Certificate from Directorate General of Shipping to work on international commercial vessels.
  • Can pursue specialized training in marine refrigeration, hydraulic systems, marine electrical systems, or advanced NDT techniques to advance into senior maintenance and supervisory roles in the maritime industry.
