Electrician Power Distribution

Skills taught in ITI

  • Preparing electrical wire joints, soldering, crimping, verifying characteristics of electrical and magnetic circuits, assembling electronic circuits, and performing measurements using analog and digital instruments.
  • Estimating, assembling, installing, and testing wiring systems, electrical illumination systems, AC motors, starters, alternators, synchronous motors, and performing speed control using AC drives and solid state devices.
  • Detecting faults and troubleshooting inverters, stabilizers, battery chargers, UPS systems, assembling control cabinet wiring, and carrying out installation and maintenance of batteries in distribution substations.
  • Installing and maintaining power distribution equipment including circuit breakers, isolators, lightning arresters, transformers, LT/HT cables, overhead distribution lines, earthing installations, and substation equipment and panels.

Skills needed by Industry

  • Ability to install, maintain, and repair electrical machinery, motors, transformers, switchgears, switchboards, and electrical fittings in factories, workshops, power houses, and residential premises.
  • Proficiency in erecting and maintaining overhead electric power lines, fixing insulators, lightning arresters, stringing cables, joining cables, replacing faulty components, and testing electrical continuity.
  • Competence in fitting and assembling electrical machinery including motors, generators, transformers, bus bars, panel boards, fuse boxes, and switchgears as per drawings and wiring diagrams.
  • Skills in testing electrical installations using megger, ammeter, voltmeter, locating faults, monitoring meter readings, generating energy bills, and operating firefighting equipment in substations.

  • Can join the Crafts Instructor Training Scheme (CITS) to become a certified ITI instructor in the Electrician Power Distribution trade after gaining required industry experience under DGT.
  • Can obtain licenses and certifications from state electricity boards or electrical inspectorates to work as a licensed electrician for undertaking independent electrical contracting work.
